Samsung Electronics Co. and SK hynix Inc. claimed made the World’s First Next Generation Mobile Memory Low Power DDR4.

WorldWide Tech & Science. Francisco De Jesùs.

Both Samsung Electronics Co. and SK hynix Inc. claimed Monday to have developed the next-generation mobile DRAM (dynamic random access memory) chip with twice-as-fast speed than the existing model.
Dubbed the new LPDDR4 (Low Power DDR4), the product is the industry's first eight-gigabit memory chip using 20 nanometer technology with a speed of 3,200 megabits per second (Mbps), two times faster than the 1,600 Mbps of its predecessor LPDDR3, the companies said.
The two South Korean tech giants each claimed that they have developed the world's first LPDDR 4 on Thursday.

The latest DRAM chip can run on a relatively small power of 1.1 volts, lower than the 1.2 volts of the existing LPDDR3, they said.

Its mass production will start in the second half of 2014.

Samsung, the world's largest manufacturer of computer memory chips, said it will focus on the premium mobile devices and ultra-slim notebooks with the new chip.

SK hynix said the new mobile DRAM will be applied in flagship mobile devices starting next year and gradually expand its presence to become the industry's leading product by 2016.

"The company will further strengthen its competitiveness in the mobile area with the development of high density, ultrahigh speed and low power consuming products," it said.

Below you can find both companies individual Press Releases. Samsung was published by BusinessWire on Dec 29,2013, and SK Hynix themselves on Dec 30, 2013.

Press Release:

Samsung Develops Industry’s First 8Gb LPDDR4 Mobile DRAM

Ushering in the next-generation of ultra-fast mobile memory to meet growing market demand

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., the world leader in advanced memory technology, announced today that it has developed the industry’s first eight gigabit (Gb), low power double data rate 4 (LPDDR4), mobile DRAM.

“This next-generation LPDDR4 DRAM will contribute significantly to faster growth of the global mobile DRAM market, which will soon comprise the largest share of the entire DRAM market,” said Young-Hyun Jun, executive vice president, memory sales & marketing, Samsung Electronics. “We will continue introducing the most advanced mobile DRAM one step ahead of the rest of the industry so that global OEMs can launch innovative mobile devices with exceptional user convenience in the timeliest manner.”
Samsung’s new high-speed 8Gb LPDDR4 mobile DRAM will provide the highest level of density, performance and energy efficiency for mobile memory applications, enabling end users to have faster, more responsive applications, more advanced features, and higher resolution displays while maximizing battery life.
The 8Gb LPDDR4 is fabricated on 20-nanometer (nm) class* process technology, and offers 1 gigabyte (GB) on a single die, which is the largest density available for DRAM components today. With four of the 8Gb chips, a single 4GB LPDDR4 package can provide the highest level of performance available today.
In addition, Samsung’s new 8Gb LPDDR4 uses a Low Voltage Swing Terminated Logic (LVSTL) I/O interface, which was originally proposed by Samsung to JEDEC and has become a standard specification for LPDDR4 DRAM. Based on this new interface, the LPDDR4 chip will enable a data transfer rate per pin of 3,200 megabits per second (Mbps), which is twice that of the 20nm-class LPDDR3 DRAM now in mass production. Overall, the new LPDDR4 interface will provide 50 percent higher performance than the fastest LPDDR3 or DDR3 memory. Also, it consumes approximately 40 percent less energy at 1.1 volts.
With the new chip, Samsung will focus on the premium mobile market including large screen UHD smartphones, tablets and ultra-slim notebooks that offer four times the resolution of full-HD imaging, and also on high-performance network systems.
Samsung is leading mobile DRAM technology development and is the leader in mobile DRAM market share with its 4Gb and 6Gb LPDDR3. It started offering the thinnest and smallest 3GB LPDDR3 (6Gb) package solutions in November and will provide its new 8Gb LPDDR4 DRAM in 2014. The 8Gb mobile DRAM chip will rapidly expand the market for high-density DRAM in next-generation mobile devices.

CES 2014: Samsung Electronics will showcase its 2014 Smart TV with Voice Interaction/finger gesture.

CES 2014: Samsung Electronics will showcase its 2014 Smart TV with Voice Interaction/finger gesture.

WorldWide Tech & Science. Francisco De Jesùs.

Samsung Electronics will showcase its 2014 Smart TV with enhanced usability at CES 2014, held from January 7 – 10, 2014 in Las Vegas.

Samsung’s voice interaction service, which understands natural languages, is currently available in 11 countries. In 2014, the service will expand into 12 new markets, making the service available in a total of 23 countries worldwide. Samsung has also made the service more convenient by focusing on the most frequently-used functions and taking into consideration user’s usage patterns.

“Samsung’s 2014 Smart TV models deliver significantly improved voice interaction and motion control features so that our consumers will be able to enjoy our Smart TV more intuitively,” said Kyungshik Lee, Senior Vice President of the Service Strategy Team of Visual Display Business, Samsung Electronics. “We will continue to develop content that integrates voice and motion recognition for added convenience.”

With the 2014 Smart TV, finding content is easier than ever. Users can change the channel in one step – by simply saying the channel number. They can even open a website or app using shortcuts. For reference, 2013 models require two steps to change TV channels: ‘Channel Change’ and ‘Channel Number’

The voice search feature is also more convenient to use, letting users find all content results in one place.

Further, when a consumer uses voice interaction to search for daily living information such as weather, stocks and sports while watching TV, a pop-up window appears on the bottom of the page with search results. Consumers can move to the app and see the details by clicking the pop-up.

Along with voice interaction, the motion control has been improved by adding the ‘finger gesture’ feature of the 2014 Smart TVs – a significant improvement to motion control.

Thanks to ‘finger gesture,’ users can change the TV channel, adjust the volume, find and select what they want to watch just by using their fingers. They can also go back to the previous screen and stop the video by motioning their finger counterclockwise – a more intuitive way to control the TV.

2014: Samsung Electronics will launch a “Big Data Center”

WorldWide Tech & Science. Francisco De Jesùs.

Samsung Electronics will launch a “Big Data Center” at its media solution center in 2014.

This is widely seen as a move to turn the firm into a company like IBM or CISCO by putting more resources in strengthening its non-consumer business and boosting its capability to manage data-intensive devices according to each customer.

“We plan to level up our forecast by analyzing Big Data tools,” Samsung said in a press release. It is part of the electronics giant’s reorganization plan for 2014.

It has given more authority to the “Global Business-to-Business (B2B)” center as businesses with corporate clients have emerged as Samsung’s next cash-cow, the company said.

The establishments come after in-depth analysis of information is regarded as the crucial differentiator for any organization.

In response to calls by investors and analysts to cut its heavy reliance on the smartphone business, Samsung officials said capturing and managing structured and unstructured data could transform its business strategies for the better and be a valuable tool for meeting customer demand.

“This is the first time that Samsung has established the Big Data Center. It means, by creating profiles for each corporate client or consumer through Big Data tools, Samsung’s brand offerings could be targeted to meet the customized and specific needs of each client and we believe this is really important for retailers,” said a Samsung official by telephone.

As Samsung’s priority is to raise its profile among corporate clients, its memory chips, for example, are developed for use in high-performance servers and next-generation data centers that include Big Data systems.

Its solid-state drives (SSD) are one part that explains its transition toward a trusted solution provider, according to Samsung officials.

The statement also said the tech giant has recently created a Solution Development Center to supply its logic chips with a greater stability to corporate clients such as Apple.

“Samsung has so far seen a noticeable progress of external corporate growth. The addition of the Big Data Center means that Samsung’s answer for the next phase of growth is companies not consumers,” said another Samsung official.

It’s been in talks with major logistics and retail channels including FeDEX to offer customized phones that can check inventories and control delivery systems with Samsung phones.

Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Kwon Oh-hyun said its goal of achieving $400 billion annual revenue by 2020 remains unchanged as it’s been reaching out to corporate-linked businesses from institutions and educational markets to healthcare facilities that all need highly-stabilized solutions.

In a reshuffle of the company’s divisions, it has maintained the current three divisions ㅡ consumer electronics, device solutions and telecommunications ㅡ however, the firm’s mobile division led by co-CEO Shin Jong-kyun acquired its money-losing camera business.

“Our camera business is expected to create synergy with the decision as Samsung smartphones are already the global top and have stronger brand, as well as stable channels,” said the company.

Yoon Boo-keun, co-CEO of Samsung who handles its consumer electronics division, didn’t respond to questions from reporters as he left the Samsung headquarters in Seocho after participating in Wednesday’s weekly regular meeting with top Samsung executives.
