Sony announced 2-in-1 New Micro USB and USB Flash Drive for Android Smartphone and Tablets.
WorldWide Tech & Science. Francisco De Jesùs.
Sony’s newest USB flash drive is a “2-in-1” device, with dual micro USB and USB 2.0 connectors for fast and easy back-up, sharing and storing of personal content. The new drive fits most Android* smartphones and tablets so mobile consumers can transfer and view photos and videos without using cables or Wi-Fi access.
According to industry research, photo-taking is the third most common use for a smartphone, with viewing and sharing not far behind. Tablets are also finding similar use, increasing the need for multi-function devices.
“Consumers want to let a friend see the photo they just took or share a video easily with as few steps as possible,” said Viviano Cantu, director of consumer media marketing, Sony Electronics. “These new drives combine convenience, peace of mind and performance and are perfect for mobile multi-tasking.”
The compact devices are available in capacities of 8, 16 and 32 GB, and in a choice of 3 different cap colors. They join Sony’s existing line of storage and transfer options for home and mobile use, giving consumers more flexibility in how they manage personal data.
The new drives are compatible with Android* devices, version 4.0.3 to 4.3** and offer the USB On-the-Go (OTG) function, which allows portable devices like smartphones to act as a “host” when connected to other USB peripherals.
Consumers can also use the drives as additional or temporary storage for their smartphones and tablets, a storage option that’s ideal for enjoying large data files like feature-length movies or personal music libraries.
A locking cap protects the connectors from damage, dust and debris, and the devices’ metal body is durable enough to withstand everyday mobile use.
For easier operation from a smartphone, users can download the free File Manager app from the Play Store to help them easily search content stored on their different devices as well as copy, delete, playback and sort files.
The new USB flash drives will be available January 2014 at Sony retail stores (www.store.sony.com) at the following prices:
8 GB (USM-8SA1/B) – $19.99
16 GB (USM-16SA1/B) – $29.99
32 GB (USM-32SA1/B) – $62.99
*Can be used with Android devices with USB flash drive connectivity using Android version 4.0.3-4.3, with planned future compatibility for Android version 4.4.

Samsung Windows Phone 9 might come next. Microsoft willing to pay $1B incentive. OS no fees maybe.
Samsung Windows Phone 9 might come next. Microsoft willing to pay $1B incentive.
WorldWide Tech & Science. Francisco De Jesùs.
Russian blogger Eldar Murtazin has revealed an interesting note about Microsoft’s upcoming Windows Phone plans:apparently the Redmond-based giant plans to pay an astounding $1 billion “bribe” to another tech behemoth to ensure that it continues making Windows Phone handsets.
“Another ‘good’ news from Microsoft,” Murtazin wrote on Twitter. “Company negotiates with Samsung and offer $1 billion support if vendor will produce Windows Phone devices.”
While this is just a rumor at this point, it wouldn’t be the first time Microsoft puts its cash reserves behind the development of Windows Phone.
Microsoft paid Nokia $250 million per quarter to adopt Windows Phone, even though the Finnish company “returned” the favor with Windows Phone licensing fees – in March 2013, Nokia revealed that it still had to pay around $650 in licensing fees from that point until the contract expired, at which point licensing fees would surpass Microsoft’s “platform support payments.”
Microsoft did not stop with its Windows Phone spending spree there, deciding to buy the mobile division of Nokia for over $7 billion, a purchase that has received the go ahead from shareholders and industry regulators. Also worth noting is that Microsoft incentivized developers with serious cash to bring their apps to the Windows Phone ecosystem.
As for Samsung, the South Korean company is currently king of the mobile business when it comes to market share, while dividing mobile profits with Apple, although the latter gets the larger chunk of cash each quarter. In addition to its Android and Tizen interests, Samsung already makes Windows Phones handsets and Windows 8 computers.
The company has been known to avoid placing its eggs in one basket when it comes to its mobile business and flooding the market with handsets to match every taste and pocket, so making Windows Phone smartphones may still be in the cards for Samsung for the near future, regardless of whether Murtazin’s rumor is correct or not.
One thing that Microsoft is also said to be considering is dropping licensing fees for Windows Phone, which could also be a good enough incentive for interested OEMs to make more Windows Phone devices.

Forecast: 2013: Androids tablets leading worldwide market share, says IDC. Chart.
Forecast: 2013: Androids tablets leading worldwide market share, says IDC. Chart.
WorldWide Tech & Science. Francisco De Jesùs.
Android, Tablet PC, Windows Mobile, iOS
WorldWide Tech & Science. Francisco De Jesùs.
According to the latest forecast from the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Tablet Tracker, worldwide tablet shipments are expected to reach 221.3 million units in 2013, down slightly from a previous forecast of 227.4 million but still 53.5% above 2012 levels. Shipment growth is forecast to slow to 22.2% year over year in 2014 to a total of 270.5 million units. By 2017, annual market growth will slow to single-digit percentages and shipments will peak at 386.3 million units, down from the previous forecast of 407 million units.
One key factor to watch going forward is the mix of small vs. large tablets. The market has trended toward small tablets in a big way over the last 24 months, but the rise of large phones could well push consumers back toward larger tablets as the difference between a 6-inch smartphone and a 7-inch tablet isn't great enough to warrant purchasing both. Apple's launch of the iPad Air, a much thinner and lighter version of its 9.7-inch product, could herald another market transition back toward larger screens, presuming consumers are willing to pay the higher costs associated with bigger screens.
"In some markets consumers are already making the choice to buy a large smartphone rather than buying a small tablet, and as a result we've lowered our long-term forecast," said Tom Mainelli, Research Director, Tablets. "Meanwhile, in mature markets like the U.S. where tablets have been shipping in large volumes since 2010 and are already well established, we're less concerned about big phones cannibalizing shipments and more worried about market saturation."
A transition toward larger tablets could be a positive development for Windows tablets, which generally benefit from a larger screen area. Even so, Windows-based tablets are not expected to steal share from tablets running iOS and Android until the latter part of the forecast.
"For months, Microsoft and Intel have been promising more affordable Windows tablets and 2-in-1 devices," said Jitesh Ubrani, Research Analyst, Worldwide Tablet Tracker. "This holiday season, we expect a huge push for these devices as both companies flex their marketing muscles; however we still don't expect them to gain much traction. We're already halfway through the holiday quarter, and though there have been some relatively high-profile launches from the likes of Dell, HP, and Lenovo, we've yet to see widespread availability of these devices, making it difficult for Windows to gain share during this crucial period."

The Mayday Button
Revolutionary On-Device Tech Support from Amazon’s Tech Advisors
Having trouble or want to learn how to use a new feature? Simply tap the Mayday button in
Quick Settings, and an Amazon expert will appear on your Fire HDX and can co-pilot you
through any feature by drawing on your screen, walking you through how to do something
yourself, or doing it for you—whatever works best. 15 seconds or less is the Mayday
response time goal. Mayday is available 24x7, 365 days a year, and it’s free. See the
separate press release on the Mayday button and preview three upcoming TV ads that
show how the Mayday button works: www.amazon.com/mayday.
New Amazon-Exclusive Features and Services
Fire OS 3.0 “Mojito”
Kindle Fire HDX is powered by the newest version of Fire OS – Fire OS 3.0 “Mojito”, which
introduces hundreds of new and upgraded features, Amazon-exclusive services, platform
updates and more. Fire OS starts with Android and adds cloud services, a content-first user
interface, built-in media libraries, productivity apps and low-level platform enhancements to
integrate Amazon’s digital content and improve performance for Kindle Fire tablets. If an app
runs on Android, it can run on Fire OS. Read more: www.amazon.com/fireos.
Download Prime Instant Videos on Kindle Fire HDX to Watch Anywhere
Prime Instant Video is the only U.S. online subscription streaming service that enables
offline viewing—on a plane, on vacation, and anywhere else where you may not have Wi-Fi.
Tens of thousands of Prime Instant Videos are now available for download on Fire HDX. If
you are new to Prime, you get one free month of Amazon Prime when you purchase Fire
HDX.
All-New X-Ray for Music
Amazon is expanding X-Ray to music by adding lyrics that let you follow along with songs.
Lyrics display and scroll automatically line-by-line as the song plays. See a screenshot:
www.amazon.com/x-ray.
X-Ray for Movies and TV—Now Even Better
Customer-favorite X-Ray for Movies and TV now shows the names of songs as they play as
well as a list of all music in the movie or TV show, and lets you jump to the scene in which a
particular song is playing. X-Ray also shows trivia items in context with the action on the
screen. For example, in The Godfather when Clemenza tells his henchman to “leave the
gun, take the cannoli”, X-Ray alerts you that actor Richard Castellano ad-libbed that famous
line of dialog. X-Ray for TV also provides character backstories so you can easily remind
yourself of the character’s history. X-Ray is offered only by Amazon and is powered by IMDb.
Second Screen Lets Others Join In
Fling TV shows and movies from your tablet to your big-screen TV using Second Screen,
which turns your TV into the primary screen and frees up your Fire HDX to provide playback
controls, a customized display for X-Ray, or simply a place to email, browse the web, and
more while you watch a movie. Second Screen will be available starting next month for
PlayStation 3 and Samsung TVs, and later this year for PlayStation 4. You can also
wirelessly mirror movies, TV shows and photos from your tablets to your big-screen TV with
Miracast-enabled accessories or TVs.
Stay Connected with Expanded Email, Docs, and Printing
With the new email on Fire HDX, it is easier than ever to set up your accounts, group
conversations by subject, sync your email and more. Reading and managing documents on
Fire HDX is simple: email them, sync them from a computer with Cloud Drive, clip them
from the web with Send to Kindle, or transfer them via USB. Coming mid-November as part
of the free, over-the-air Fire OS 3.1 update—print documents, photos, emails, and calendar
events directly from Kindle Fire to compatible wireless printers.
Complete Enterprise Support
Fire HDX is ready for work, with support for encryption of the user partition of the device to
secure data; support for Kerberos authentication so corporate users can browse secure
intranet websites; the ability to connect to secure enterprise Wi-Fi networks as well as
corporate networks via a native or a 3rd party VPN client; and Mobile Device Management
solutions ranging from Amazon’s Whispercast service to 3rd party vendors like AirWatch,
Citrix, Fiberlink, Good Technology, and SOTI. Some of these features will be delivered as
part of the Fire OS 3.1 update. See the separate press release on enterprise features:

Cloud Collections
Organize your books, newspapers, magazines, and apps in customized collections for easy
reference, and Amazon’s Whispersync technology synchronizes the collections across your
Kindle devices and reading apps so they’re available on all of your devices. Cloud
Collections will be available as part of the Fire OS 3.1 update.
