Q3 2014: Intel will start selling the Haswell-E series 8 core desktops cpu at around  $1.000.-

Intel is set to release its first eight-core processors for desktops, the Haswell-E series in the third quarter of 2014 priced at around US$1,000. The new series will succeed the existing Ivy Bridge-E.Intel will also release its next-generation high-end chipsets, the X99 to pair with the processors.

However, the processors will only account for a small portion of Intel's CPU shipments and combined shipment shares of Ivy Bridge-E and Haswell-E processors will be less than 5% at the end of 2014.
The Haswell-E series will adopt a 22nm process and have two separated branches, X and K series. The CPUs also support Intel's Hyper-Threading technology and Turbo Boost technology 2.0, PCI-Express Gen 3.0 and DDR4 memory up to 2,133MHz, the sources explained.
The X99 chipsets will support native USB 3.0 ports and feature 10 6Gb/s SATA ports, the sources added. In the second quarter of 2014, Intel will release the Haswell Refresh platform. Shipments will start in May and the platform will be announced at Computex 2014 in June. Intel will also start shipping its next-generation Z97 and H97 chipsets in March and April in order for motherboard vendors to start selling 9-series products in April.

Broadcom first time won a Samsung LTE phone design

WorldWide Tech & SCience. Francisco De Jesùs.

Qualcomm, Broadcom and Intel are the most known players in this LTE chipsets race, with Qualcomm leading this market since 2011.

What Broadcom won?

Broadcom announced at its analyst day that it had won a Samsung LTE design with its latest integrated apps processor and LTE baseband.

Broadcom is selling Samsung the entire platform -- modem, RF, connectivity, apps processor -- and given that the low end of the market is where all of the really attractive growth is, this design could open the doors to many more design wins and, therefore, very nice top- and bottom-line growth for Broadcom.

What is the scope?
Broadcom will be up against many players going forward. While Broadcom seems to be the No. 2 player in integrated LTE SoCs, the No. 2 player in discrete LTE modems appears to be Intel. To illustrate, Broadcom is sampling its LTE-Advanced, category 6 modem during the first half of 2014 -- likely in the second quarter.
That implies that volume shipments won't happen until late 2014/early 2015. Intel, on the other hand, claims that its own modem with similar specifications is on track for launch in handsets during the first half of 2014. Fortunately for Broadcom, Intel's integrated LTE SoC won't hit the market until early 2015,  giving Broadcom a nice head start.

Intel`s Galileo open source computer, priced US$69.90.-

Intel`s Galileo open source computer, priced US$69.90.-

The Galileo computer is an unenclosed circuit board that's a little larger than a credit card, and uses Intel's extremely low-power Quark processor. The board is targeted at the community of makers and enthusiasts who make computing devices ranging from robots and health monitors to home media centers and PCs.

Intel had earlier said the computer would be available for under $60 by the end of November. Online retailer Mouser Electronics is the first to take orders for the board, and the price falls to $68.25 per unit for a bulk purchase of 100 boards.

Galileo is based on the new line of Quark processors announced by Intel in September. The Quark chips draw less power than the company's Atom chips, and are targeted at wearable devices and small electronics, which today typically use either microcontrollers or ARM CPUs.

Some projects using Galileo are already underway. The board is used in an experiment called YesYesBot, in which a foam-filled robot dishes out candy. A project called Lyt employs the board in a lighted panel that can be controlled from smartphones or tablets. Intel has assisted in both of the projects.

Intel announced the board in early October, and is tapping into the maker community as a way to figure out how to best use Quark chips. The board is open source, meaning that Intel will release its schematics and design for others to replicate and manufacture. Intel reached out to the enthusiast community for the first time in July when it started selling its first open-source PC called MinnowBoard, which is priced at $199.

The Quark chip is based on the x86 instruction set, drawing from Pentium chip designs. The 32-bit chip runs at a clock speed of 400MHz and has 512KB of RAM.

Features on the Galileo board include 8MB flash, 256MB DRAM, 100Mbps (bits per second) Ethernet port, a micro-SD connector slot, a mini PCI-Express slot, RS-232 serial port and a USB 2.0 port with support for up to 128 host devices. A compatible power supply, jumpers, resistors, capacitors and other components can be bought separately from Adafruit Industries, SparkFun Electronics, Maker Shed and other retailers.

Galileo runs a lightweight version of Linux. The board supports the Arduino development environment, which is used to write programs for other boards and standard microcontrollers.

Intel will be giving away 50,000 Galileo boards to students at over 1,000 universities over the next 18 months, though the company hasn't yet disclosed at which educational institutions it will do so.
